About Us

Neighbors,

A lot of you have just recently been made aware of a proposed massive complex that, if built, will drastically change the nature of our neighborhood.

Most often called The Howard’s project, it is a 259-unit, 4-story apartment complex with limited commercial use proposed for the old site of Howard’s Nursery (and adjacent Parker lot) between 56th St and Koenig at Ave F. The project would generate an estimated 2,028 car trips per day. And the primary entrance/exit for their 400+ car parking garage would dump straight into our residential streets.

Wait! What’s going on? Why wasn’t I told?

These are our sentiments exactly.

And why we, a small group of neighbors, have over the last three weeks (that’s how long we have known) spent many hours trying to understand the pros and cons of this development, the development process as a whole, and what recourse we have as a neighborhood to either stop the proposed development or, more likely, guide the plan in a direction that would do less damage (and hopefully provide some benefit) to the neighborhood.

As we learned about the project—and it took some work—we realized that almost all of the neighborhood had been kept in the dark about it. This wasn’t the NA’s intention, of course. They have been working hard for years to better the hood and get more neighbors involved. And we appreciate the hard work.

Two weeks ago came a revelation. It was that only 100 e-mail subscribers (out of the 1400 households in our neighborhood) had been participating in an ongoing discussion about the project since sometime in July!

We felt that a discussion of this significance MUST include a greater number of residents.

Even as I write this late on September 25, most people living in homes adjacent to the proposed project have little idea about the details of the project, consequences it will have for them, and how they can participate in the eventual outcome.

For all of these reasons we have taken on the effort, starting tomorrow, to distribute flyers to the neighborhood by going door to door.

And we formed I Love North Loop.

We hope it becomes a source of information about this ongoing development and other more happy news in the future.

Sincerely,

Jody Horton
North Loop Resident
